Species Colgar tricolor Distant, 1910

Compiler and date details

11 March 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

  • Type data:
Syntype(s) BMNH sex, quantity unknown (Medler's (1990) recognition of a holotype is invalid because Distant (1910) clearly indicates that he had multiple specimens, including both sexes, and does not indicate that he had selected one to be the primary type. ICZN Article 74.5 precludes Medler (1990) from designating a lectotype by default. All Distant's specimens therefore remain as syntypes pending a formal designation of a lectotype), Queensland.

Introduction

Medler (2001) states that this species has a wide distribution on mainland and eastern outlying islands of Australia and New Guinea. However, this comment really only applies to New Guinea since its recorded distribution in Australia is limited to the wet tropics of North Queensland.

Diagnosis

Body and legs pale green; abdomen above and body beneath whitely tomentose; tegmina pale green, with numerous irregular whitish spots, beyond the middle some of these spots form more or less distinctly two oblique macular fasciae, costal margin from end of costal membrane, and apical margin continued to claval apex, very narrowly sanguineous, three small sanguineous spots in longitudinal series on disk, the one nearest base usually smallest and somewhat indistinct; wings creamy white, the veins more or less pale bluish green; vertex finely sparingly granulose, anteriorly moderately upturned, a little longer than the pronotum, strongly centrally longitudinally carinate; pronotum very sparingly granulose, centrally carinate, the lateral margins also carinate; mesonotum tricarinate; tegmina about twice as long as broad, moderately arched at base, the apical margin truncately oblique; claval area strongly granulose. In some specimens the apical area of the tegmina is somewhat suffused with pale reddish ochraceous and the carinations to the face are more or less sanguineous. Long., excl. tegm., ♂ ♀ 7–7½ mm.; exp. tegm. 19–20 mm (Distant 1910).

Tegmen with three aligned spots composed of varying concentrations of minute red dots. Vertex / pronotum ratio 1.0–1.14. Hind leg spine formula 1 : 6 : 7 (Medler 2001)
