Subgenus Charybdis (Goniohellenus) Alcock, 1899
- Goniohellenus Alcock, A. 1899. Materials for a Carcinological Fauna of India. No. 4. The Brachyura Cyclometopa. Part II. A Revision of the Cyclometopa with an Account of the Families Portunidae, Cancridae and Corystidae. Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal 68(Pt 2 No. 1): 1-104 [48] [first introduced as a subgenus of Charybdis De Haan, 1833; gender masculine].
Type species:
Goniosoma hoplites Wood-Mason, 1877 by subsequent designation, see Davie, P. 2002. Crustacea: Malacostraca: Eucarida (Part 2): Decapoda—Anomura, Brachyura. In Wells, A. & Houston, W.W.K. (eds) Zoological Catalogue of Australia. Vol. 19.3B. Melbourne : CSIRO Publishing, Australia xiv 641 pp. [475]. - Archias Paul'son, O.M. 1875. Studies on Crustacea of the Red Sea with Notes regarding other Seas. Part I. Podophthalmata and Edriophthalmata (Cumacea). Jerusalem : The Israel Program for Scientific Translations 164 pp. 21 pls. [reissued and translated by F.D. Por, 1961] [56] [nom. dub.; gender masculine].
Type species:
Archias sexdentatus Paul'son, 1875 by monotypy (this species was described from a juvenile and its identity remains in doubt; most recently it has been treated as a probable synonym of Charybdis (Goniohellenus) longicollis Leene, 1938, but the possibility that it is even a species of Portunus cannot be completely ruled out; examination of the type, or a neotype designation, will be necessary to resolve the problem, see (Apel, M. & Spiridonov, V.A., 1998) [222–223]).
Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy
- Davie, P. 2002. Crustacea: Malacostraca: Eucarida (Part 2): Decapoda—Anomura, Brachyura. In Wells, A. & Houston, W.W.K. (eds) Zoological Catalogue of Australia. Vol. 19.3B. Melbourne : CSIRO Publishing, Australia xiv 641 pp. [475] (Archias must be treated as a nomen dubium until the identity of its type species is clarified (see above); until then it should not be used as the senior available name for this subgenus)
