Type species:
Caristius japonicus Gill & Smith, 1905 by monotypy.
Introduction
Records of this genus from Australia have been based on misidentifications of northern hemisphere species, with the Australian records belonging to new species. Stevenson & Kenaley (2013) restricted Caristius macropus to the north Pacific. They also regarded Caristius groenlandicus as a junior synonym of Caristius fasciatus, a species restricted to the North Atlantic. They did not examine all Australian material and distributions given here are based on material used in new species descriptions and material identified recently by John Pogonoski (CSIRO) and Ken Graham (AM).
