Introduction

Caristiids form a small family of circumglobal deepwater fish (Nelson 2006). Currently, the family comprises four genera and 15 recognised species, and three genera and five species from Australia (Stevenson & Kenaley 2011, 2013). Stevenson & Kenaley (2013) revised Caristius and Platyberyx, excluding most species previously recorded from Australia in Bray et al. (2006). These two major studies only examined some Australian material. Distributions given here are based on those studies plus material identified recently by John Pogonoski (CSIRO) and Ken Graham (AM). Two or more additional species of uncertain identity are known from the CSIRO collection.

Manefishes are deep bodied and have a very high dorsal fin on a long base. They are oceanic species, recorded from all three oceans, in the epi- and meso-pelagic, where they are normally associated with siphonophores (Janssen & Gibbs 1989). Maximum size is 60 cm.
