Species Carcinoplax haswelli (Miers, 1884)

Generic Combinations

Introduction

Pseudorhombila haswelli Miers (1884) was described from the Arafura Sea and subsequently assigned to the monotypic genus Homoioplax (Prionoplacinae, Goneplacidae) by Rathbun (1914). More recently Guinot (1978) showed Prionoplacinae to be a junior synonym of Eucratopsinae Stimpson, 1871, and transferred the subfamily to the Panopeidae Ortmann, 1893, however the position of H. haswelli was not reassessed and it remained in Panopeidae as the only Indo-West Pacific representative of the family. Ng et al (2022) redescribed H. haswelli through examination of type and other material and determined that the species was conspecific with Carcinoplax sinica Chen (1984) described from the South China Sea. As a result Homoiopolax is a junior synonym of Carcinoplax in Goneplacidae, with C. haswelli comb. nov. taking priority over C. sinica.

Melbourne : CSIRO Publishing, Australia xiv 641 pp. [374] (authorship of this species has often been attributed to Rathbun (1914), but Miers (1884) originally identified his specimens from the Arafura Sea, with reserve, as 'Pseudorhombilia vestita (de Haan), var, sexdentata, Haswell' thus subordinating Haswell's Eucrate sexdentata to a subspecies of Pseudorhombila vestita. However, he suggested that his specimens might be distinct and suggested the name Pseudorhombilia haswelli to be used if this should prove to be so. Therefore, authorship must be given to Miers (1884))
