Introduction
This suborder contains two families (Callionymidae and Draconettidae) of small marine fishes. Gosline (1970) suggested a relationship with the Gobiesocidae, subsequently supported by Patterson & Rosen (1989) and followed by Nelson (1994, 2006). Several workers, including Hayashi et al. (1986) have questioned the relationship with Gobiesocidae. Springer & Johnson (2004) placed the group as a suborder of the Callionymoidei. Nelson (2006) retained the suborder Gobiesocoidei, but accepted a close relationship between Gobiesocoidei and Callionymoidei. Bentacur-R et al. (2013) have placed the group as part of a larger Sygnathiformes including many groups traditionally not regarded as closely related.
