Subtribe Bubastina Obenberger, 1920

Introduction

The definition of Bubastina originally contained genera from Australia, the southern Palaearctic and Afrotropical Regions. A recent revision of the genus Paratassa Marseul by Bílý & Volkovitsh (1996) removed that genus from consideration by placing it in a new higher taxon, Paratassina. The two Afrotropical taxa that are currently included in Bubastina, Strandiola paradoxa Obenberger from Somalia and Bubastoides argodi Kerremans from Mozambique, need further study to realign their placement. The Bubastina is undoubtedly of Australian origin and possibly monophyletic although the inclusion of the five genera classified below still awaits better definition. Théry (1929) added that "the tribe… is not sufficiently characterized for retention" and considered the genera as part of his Buprestes.

In that old classification, Théry placed Microcastalia in the Polycestae, while the other genera were grouped in Buprestes. The addition of the genera Microcastalia Heller, Notobubastes Carter and Neobubastes Blackburn into this subtribe is not yet confirmed but any other placement is equally undefined.
