Species Kyphosus bigibbus Lacépède, 1801

Introduction

Frequently misidentified as Kyphosus gibsoni, a junior synonym of K. vaigiensis (see Allen 1997, Knudsen & Clements 2013), and as K. sydneyanus.

Extra Distribution Information

Rottnest Island (32°01'S) to Dampier Archipelago (20°25'S) and Scott Reef (14°04'S), WA, Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea (12°16'S), Christmas Island, and south of Cairns, QLD (17°11'S) to Montague Island, NSW (36°16'S), also Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island; tropical, circumglobal, anti-tropical in Indian and Pacific oceans (north-west Pacific and south Indo-west Pacific, east to Kermadec Islands), also eastern and western Atlantic and eastern Pacific). Records from Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea are probably misidentifications of Kyphosus vaigiensis or K. sectatrix.
