Introduction

This species is more widespread than other Australian species of the genus extending south from Cape York Peninsula to the wet tropics of North Queensland. It was "dedicated to a promising young biologist, Miss Virginie Guibourt" (Constant 2011).

Ecological Descriptors

All stages: phloem feeder (associated flora: Toona ciliata M. Roem, 1846 [MELIACEAE] Australian Red Cedar).

 

Diagnosis

This species keys to Birdantis similis (Schmidt) in a key provided by Lallemand (1963) but B. virginiae is easily separated from B. similis by the following characters of the latter: base of tegmina red; no black line between frons and vertex; three central lines of frons joining dorsally (Constant 2011).
