Holotype ANSP 72008, Aguni Shima, Ryukyu Islands.
Introduction
Hobbs & Allen (2014) reported hybrids between this species and Chromis fieldi.

Houtman Abrolhos (28°44'S) to Bonaparte Archipelago (14°19'S), also Rowley Shoals (17°20'S), Scott Reef (14°03'S) and Seringapatam Reef, WA, Ashmore Reef and Cartier Island, Timor Sea (12°15'S) and Mount Adolphus Island (10°38'S) to Flinders Reef 27°59'S), QLD, Portlock Reef, Osprey Reef, Holmes Reef and Lihou Reef, Coral Sea, Middleton Reef, Elizabeth Reef and Lord Howe Island, juveniles from as far south as Montague Island, NSW; tropical, east-Indo-west-central Pacific.
