Introduction

The Bathyclupeidae are a small family with seven nominal species in the single genus Bathyclupea; Nelson (2006) estimated that there are about five valid species. Bathyclupeids are recorded from the north-western and south-eastern Atlantic and Indo-west Pacific. A single species is known from Australian waters, but the specimens have not been studied thoroughly. Tom Trnski identified the 25 specimens lodged at the Australian Museum using the review of Dick (1972) and the species description of Trunov (1975).

Bathyclupeids are rare deepsea fishes usually taken in bottom trawls on the continental slopes between 400 and 3300 m. Maximum recorded size is 32 cm, although most specimens are less than 25 cm in length.
