Introduction

The stiletto fly subfamily Agapophytinae (Winterton et al. 2001) comprises at least 11 genera with over 300 described and undescribed species and is largely endemic to Australasia (Winterton et al. 2001). This subfamily presently includes the genera Acatopygia Kröber, Acraspisa Kröber, Acraspisoides Hill & Winterton, Acupalpa Kröber, Agapophytus Guérin, Belonalys Kröber, Bonjeania Irwin & Lyneborg, Laxotela Winterton & Irwin, Parapsilocephala Kröber, Patanothrix Winterton and Pipinnipons Winterton, although this number may increase substantially if the Taenogera genus-group (sensu Winterton et al. 1999b) is included in Agapophytinae as suggested by Winterton (2006, 2007a).
The Agapophytinae are distinguished by the velutum patches on on the fore femora (as well as hind and ventral surface of gonocoxites), no antero-ventral seta subapically on hind femur, and usually wing cell m3 closed (Winterton et al. 2001).
