Introduction

Members of the Arripidae are typically referred to as Australian or southern salmons. They are fished commercially throughout their range and are commonly canned under the name salmon. Australian salmon are also a popular angling fish, commonly found off sand beaches. The family comprises one genus and four species, three occurring in Australia and the fourth, Arripis xylabion, restricted to Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and New Zealand. Maximum length is 96 cm.

The family was revised by Paulin (1993) and fisheries information is available in Kailola et al. (1993).
