Introduction
The small family Anoplogastridae includes a single genus and two species. One species is known from Australia.
Fangtooths are meso- and bathpelagic to more than 5000 m worldwide. Recorded food items include crustaceans and small fishes. Adults are dark brown to black with a deep body, large mouth, very large teeth and small eye. The juveniles are so different, lacking the large teeth and dark colour, that they were originally described in a separate family. Maximum size is about 15.5 cm standard length.
The family was reviewed by Woods & Sonoda (1973) and Kotlyar (1986, 1996).
