Introduction

This magnificent insect is the largest Australian fulgorid and, apart from the larger cicadas, is the largest Australian member of the Auchenorrhyncha. It was collected at light in NE New South Wales with a single specimen from the wet tropics of North Queensland. The species was "dedicated to Dr Melinda L. Moir who collected four of the six specimens of the type series" (Constant 2010).

Ecological Descriptors

All stages: phloem feeder.

 

Diagnosis

The species is immediately recognized by the following combination of characters: (1) disc of frons without black spots, small spots only on fronto-clypeal joint, (2) hind wings without red or orange, (3) abdominal tergites black, (4) size more than 25 mm (Constant 2010).
