Introduction

This short broad species is quite dark in coloration. It is distributed widely in southern Australia, frequently but not exclusively from higher altitudes, from the New South Wales high country to Tasmania and from locations in South Australia (the type locality is Mount Lofty near Adelaide) and SW Western Australia. It is also recorded from both islands of New Zealand as well as Stewart and Chatham islands.

Ecological Descriptors

All stages: phloem feeder.

 

Diagnosis

Head ventral surface black, mottled with bright yellow; crown only slightly pointed apically, muscle impressions not extending onto the crown, marked with an irregular pattern of black and yellow; ocelli red. Pronotum yellowish grey, flecked with tranverse dark brown markings. Tegmen hyaline, greyish brown; veins white bordered with irregular dark brown markings. Thorax and abdomen ventral surface black. Legs marked with an irregular pattern of dark brown, yellow and black. Length 3mm (Evans 1938, as Deltocephalus montanus).
