Introduction
Subspecies not recognised by Mahoney & Ride (1988), although according to Ride in that same work, '[it] is possible that fusciventer, nautica and penisularae are sufficiently distinct to be treated taxonomically as subspecies'. However, they listed synonymies following Tate (1948) 'except for auratus and not for subspecies'; Lyne & Mort (1981) treat nauticus and peninsulae as separate species.
The systematic position of populations of Isoodon obesulus as subspecies is currently ambiguous and unresolved. While some texts refer to several subspecies (e.g., Van Dyck & Strahan 2008), there is little evidence to support the designation of these subspecies other than based on geography alone. Molecular evidence for subspecies designation is still unresolved (see Pope et al. 2001, Zenger et al. 2005 and Westerman et al. 2012), where there is little consensus on the number of subspecies recognised.
The most recent taxonomic treatment for I. obesulus is presented in Woinarski et al. (2014), where two subspecies are recognised: I. obesulus obesulus, and I. obesulus fusciventer.
