Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy

Introduction

Kirkaldy (1907) described males and females and both macropterous and brachypterous forms from the wet tropics of North Queensland. Muir (1917) stated that Melichar (1903) had provided a description of this species from Sri Lanka under the name Mestus morio Motschulsky but the male specimen which Melichar had used for his description and figure had been examined by Muir who determined that it did not match the generic characters of Mestus Motschulsky and therefore Melichar's use of the name Mestus morio was invalid.

Sterna, scutellum and abdomen, very dark fuscous or blackish, except the base of the abdomen above (as also most of the metanotum) and abdomen below partly, orange sanguineous. Tegmina hyaline, second apical vein suffusedly, and 5th and 6th (and apex of 4th) apical cells, fuscous; tegminal veins pale, feebly granulate.
Short-winged female. Ovoid, the whole surface shining. Vertex, antennae, frons, pronotum, scutellum, sterna, legs, etc., testaceous more or less tinged with fuscous. Tegmina more or less dark fuscous, subopaque, a little paler internally. Abdomen blackish and fuscotestaecous. Tegmina somewhat convex, not quite reaching so far as the base of the genital segment, apically rounded.
Short-winged male like the long-winged form of the same sex, but the frons paler fuscous; tegmina subopaque, pitchy, not reaching to the apex of the abdomen.
Male pygophore, lip produced suberectly, margin doubly notched close to that point. Genital styles broad at the base, narrowing apically, the apex being acute. The aedeagus is horizontal, projecting between the blunt ventral projections of the anal tube.
Length male, female (macr.) 4, male (brach.) 2 mill. (Kirkaldhy 1907)
