Genus Anectopia Kirkaldy, 1907

Compiler and date details

2 December 2010 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This genus has two species in Queensland, both described by Kirkaldy (1907). The genus is also recorded in Sri Lanka and the Philippines. With his generic description, Kirkaldy did not indicate which of the species was the type of the genus but in his comments about A. igerna he notes that it was "similar to the genotype" which indicated that he intended that A. mandane would be the type species. Muir (1915) listed A. mandane as the type species of the genus and this is taken as the formal type designation.

A third species, A. atrata from the Philippines, was added by Muir (1917) who commented that A. atrata might be the male of A. igerna Kirkaldy which was based on a single female. Muir (1917) also discussed A. mandane which he synonymised with Mestus morio Melichar (1903) from Sri Lanka. In doing so, he commented that the species did not agree with the generic characters of Mestus Motschulsky and upheld Kirkaldy's generic name Anectopia. Mestus morio Melichar was therefore a misidentification of Mestus morio Motschulsky and, as a junior homonym, was replaced by its next available name, Anectopia mandane Kirkaldy.

Diagnosis

Closely allied to Eurysa Fieber, but the veins of the tegmina in the long-winged form are more complicated apically and the bracial is forked apically. Head dorsally transverse, not extending apically beyond the eyes; vertex transverse, its two compartments each having a puncture in the middle. Frons broad, median keel almost absolete (mandane) or clearer (igerna). Antennae scarcely reaching to apical margin of frons, second segment about twice as long as the short first. Pronotum shorter and a little wider than the head, lateral keels turning more or less outwards; there is a puncture on each side of the middle keel. Tibial spur broad at base, foliaceous, with about 40 small, closely-set teeth. (Kirkaldy 1907)
