Holmiae : Laurentii Salvii Vol. 1 10, 824 pp. [227] [for many years this name was widely but erroneously applied to the species represented by Coluber spilotus Lacépède, 1804; however the snake shown in the illustration in Seba, A. 1735. Locupeltissimi rerum naturalium thesauri accurata descriptio et iconibus artificiosissimis expressio, per universam physices historiam. Amsterdam Vol. 4. (pl. 103 fig. 1), on which Linnaeus' argus was based, purportedly came from 'Africa'. It is almost certainly not a specimen of any Australian species].
