Genus Zygina Fieber, 1866

Compiler and date details

14 March 2012 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

The two Australian species currently placed in this genus do not belong there. Most of the Australian species previously placed in Zygina were transferred to the new genus Anzygina Fletcher & Larivière in 2009 but these two were left behind because they also do not belong in Anzygina. Their generic placement is still to be determined. True Zygina are widely distributed through the Oriental, Palaearctic and Nearctic regions with a false record from South Africa. The South African record presumably comes from the publication of the name "Zygina sp." for a species introduced to Australia from South Africa for the biological control of bridal veil creeper, Asparagus asparagoides (L.) Druce (Asparagaceae). The species probably belongs to an undescribed South African genus (C.H. Dietrich, pers. comm. 2009).
