Suborder ZOARCOIDEI

Compiler and date details

9 May 2012 - Dianne J. Bray

20 December 2006 - Douglass F. Hoese

Introduction

This suborder includes nine families, with most species found in marine waters of the north Pacific (Nelson 2006). A single family, Zoarcidae, is represented in Australia, and by a single species, although an additional five species occur on Australia's Antarctic/Subantarctic territorial waters. Relationships of the suborder are poorly understood. Anderson (1994) determined the monophyly of the suborder. Imamura & Yabe (2002) and Miya et al. (2003) also concluded that the Zoarcoidei were monophyletic, and that the group is closely related to Cottoidei. Wiley & Johnson (2010) placed both suborders in their order Cottiformes. Betancur-R. et al. (2013) include the zoarcoids in the Perciformes suborder Cottioidei.
