Family VEIGAIIDAE Oudemans, 1939

Introduction

The family Veigaiidae includes three genera and about 100 species (Lindquist et al. 2009). Recent taxonomic studies of the family include those of Hurlbutt (1983, 1984), Tseng (1994) and Mašán et al. (2008). Veigaiidae are found in leaf litter, moss, and seaweed, where they prey on a variety of small soft-bodied invertebrates. The Australian fauna includes only four species in a single genus, and only one of those species is an Australian native. The others are normally European or Holarctic, and may have been accidentally introduced by human activities (Halliday 2001). Unidentified Veigaiidae were also reported by Longstaff et al. (1999), Beaulieu et al. (2010) and Proctor et al. (2011).
