Introduction

This family was erected for a single extant species, Valeseguya rieki Colless, found in Victoria, and two species known only from fossilised amber: V. disjuncta Grimaldi from the Dominican Republic and Cretoseguya burmitica Amorim & Grimaldi from Myanmar.

Valeseguya rieki was originally placed in Mycetobiinae: Anisopodidae by Colless (1990). Grimaldi (1991) described a second species, V. disjuncta, from Miocene amber. Amorim and Tozoni (1995) raised the genus to subfamily Valeseguyinae within the Anisopodidae, on the basis of substantial differences, mainly in wing venation, from recent Mycetobiinae. Following the discovery of a related species in fossilised amber and the re-examination of existing specimens Amorim and Grimaldi (2006) erected the family Valeseguyidae for the two genera, Valeseguya and Cretoseguya.
