Subfamily Tychiinae Dana, 1851

Introduction

As Griffin & Tranter (1986: 61) elegantly remarked: `tychines are majids with extravagant orbits'. In their review of the Majidae, Griffin & Tranter (1986) restricted this subfamily to three Indo-west Pacific genera only, and provided a key for their descrimination.

Diagnosis

Body elongate; often with a median spine or protuberance; somewhat truncate anteriorly. Eyestalks long, retractile. Eyes without true orbits, but orbit usually extravagantly expanded above, and partially protected by a long horn-like supra-orbital spine; postorbital spine either lacking, or small and remote from eye; intercalated spine not present. Basal antennal article not extremely slender, always fused distally; merus of third maxilliped as wide as ischium. Male abdomen not terminally broadened, seventh segment subtriangular and not inserted deeply into sixth segment. Male first gonopod generally slender, weakly curved, sometimes adjacent about a third from base, apices outcurved (lyrate), aperture terminal or subterminal with at most poorly developed flaps or lobes. (After Griffin & Tranter 1986).
