Tribe Trocnadini Evans, 1947

Compiler and date details

15 September 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This tribe originally included only the endemic genus Trocnada Walker with three species, all associated with the tree genus Eucalyptus L'Héretier (Myrtaceae). The oriental genus Trocnadella Singh-Pruthi was included in the tribe by Oman et al. (1990) without any justification and it was later removed by Dai & Dietrich (2012). Krishnankutty et al. (2016) transferred the genus Thalattoscopus Kirkaldy into Trocnadini so it now contains two genera, one endemic Australian and the other distributed mainly in New Guinea and neighbouring islands with three species in Australia.

Diagnosis

Medium-sized stramineous, brown or red leafhoppers; head short, crown poorly or not delimited, ocelli on face; forewing appendix well developed but not extended around wing apex; hindwing veins R4+5 and M1+2 confluent distally; male subgenital plates elongate, only partially concealed by pregenital sternite; female first valvulae with dorsal sculpturing strigate; second valvulae with two to three prominent widely spaced dorsal teeth.

Morphological synapomorphies supporting the monophyly of this group include the absence of macrosetae on the front femur, presence of a well-developed dorsal apodeme on the aedeagus, and the short, falcate male pygofer appendage (Krishnankutty et al. 2016).
