Diagnosis
The foregoing makes it clear that P. australis resembles only one of the five known species of Paeon, i.e. P. versicolor. It shares with this species both a transversally elongate cephalothorax and a compact, abruptly expanding trunk. Wilson's (1919) figs 68-70, when compared with illustrations in this paper, clearly demonstrate, however, that these two copepods cannot belong to the same species. In P. versicolor the cephalothorax is trilobate and "somewhat obcordate in dorsal outline" (Wilson, 1919, p.596), with posterior margin "deeply invaginated" and the dorsal side "inflated". No such features exist in the cephalothorax of P. australis, which is smoothly rounded along its anterior and dorsal surfaces.
