Thysanostomatidae with a body 100-120 mm wide, exumbrella with polygonal network of nematocysts; velar lappets well separated, without a connecting membrane, shape, size and number variable; arm-disk with numerous short, slender filaments; moutharms without a naked terminal portion; intracircular canal system with comparatively large, open meshes.

Notes

The locality for this species is unclear: Haeckel originally stated that it was from Australia, and von Lendenfeld (1884d) and Stiasny (1922c) followed. However, in a later paper on the Australian Scyphomedusae, von Lendenfeld (1884h) states that it was from New Zealand; I include it here because of this ambiguity.

Despite Kishinouye's (1910) argument, Mayer (1910: 692) concluded that T. descripsum Kishinouye (1895) from Japan is identical to T. thysanura, and this has been widely adopted.
