Notes

The genus Thysanostoma was proposed by Agassiz (1862: 153) for Lesson's (1829: 120) Rhizostoma brachyura from New Guinea; Lesson (1830) later called the species Melitea brachyura, which Agassiz renamed Thysanostoma lessoni, and Haeckel (1880: 626) renamed T. melitea. Haeckel (1880: 625) also added the species T. thysanura from Australia.

Mayer (1910: 693) adopted Haeckel's (1877, unpublished) genus name Lorifera, which was used by Haeckel (1880: 628) as a junior synonym of Himantostoma. Mayer reasoned that Himantostoma was preoccupied by Loew (1853) for Diptera, and thus Lorifera must be used as an alternative, with Haeckel (1880) as the author. Mayer (1910) was thus the first to publish a description for the nomen nudum used by Haeckel.

Kramp (1961b: 364) included Haeckel's genus Lorifera as a junior synonym of Thysanostoma, including the modern-day T. lorifera and T. flagellata.
