Genus Syndelphax Fennah, 1963

Compiler and date details

4 January 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This genus was created for a single species, Delphax matanitu Kirkaldy, from Fiji by Fennah (1963) who designated D. matanitu as the type species of the genus. Later (Fennah 1965), this species was recorded from Ayr in Queensland. Fennah (1975) listed two species in the genus from Sri Lanka, one of which included a synonymy between the type species and Delphax disonymos Kirkaldy. Fennah (1975) gave priority to D. disonymos despite D. matanitu being the type species and also appearing first in Kirkaldy (1907). Under the First Reviser principle (ICZN Art. 24), Fennah's selection of D. disonymos gives this name priority.

Aedeagus tubular, simple or with few teeth subapically; genital styles relatively long, flattened and distally subtruncate (Fennah 1963).

Vertex as long or slightly longer than wide at base, slightly narrower at apex than at base, submedian carinae uniting at apex. Frons in midline about twice as long as wide. Postclypeus wider at base than frons at apex. Rostrum surpassing mesotrochanters. Antennae cylindrical, segment I longer than wide, shorter than segment II. Ocelli present. Spinal formula of hind leg 5-7-4. Post-tibial spur with 12–25 teeth. Anal segment of male ring-like or collar-shaped, lateroapical angles each produced into a spinose process. Aedeagus tubular, simple or with a few teeth subapically: Suspensorium elongate oval, ring-like. Diaphragm narrow, produced dorsomedially in a rather long process.
