Taxonomic Notes

Child (1975) described a female with fully developed ovigerous legs (the holotype female had damaged/regenerating? ovigerous legs). The condition of the ovigerous legs was one of the original criteria for establishing the new genus Siphopallene (Stock, 1968), and Child (1975), on the basis of the female described above, places Siphopallene tubirostrum back into Stylopallene. I would argue (PRESENT WORK) that the shape of the proboscis (very long and styliform) and the presence of a rough (serrated?) terminal claw on the ovigerous leg (the type species had a smooth claw) would be enough to maintain the genus Siphopallene as a distinct entity, at least for now, and recommend that a thorough revision of these taxa be undertaken before any further rearrangements are made. Staples (1997A) lists this species as Stylopallene tubirostris.
