Introduction
Strangesta maxima is distinguished from the partly sympatric Terrycarlessia turbinata by the larger size, flatter shape, less prominent spiral striae and much wider umbilicus. Animal dark grey to sepia-brown.

Diagnosis
Shell very large, reddish-brown with darker radial streaks, depressedly turbinate with a low elevated spire; protoconch with very low, weak radial ridges, teleoconch sculpture of numerous fine radial ribs intersected by incomplete spiral striae; umbilicus broad, V-shaped; diameter 48mm.
