Holotype NMWZ uncatalogued, sex undetermined, juvenile (22 mm ML, HMS Investigator No. 50B-75/7), northeastern Indian Ocean, near the Andaman Ils [approx 12°N, 92°E, 897 m]. - Stigmatoteuthis chuni Pfeffer, G. 1912. Die Cephalopoden der Plankton-Expedition. Zugleich eine monographische Ubersicht der Oegopsiden Cephalopoden. Ergebnisse der Plankton-Expedition der Humboldt-Stiftung 2: 1-815 pls 1-48 [286] (based on an inadequate description by Chun, C. 1910. Die Cephalopoden 1. Teil: Oegopsida. Wissenschaftliche Ergebnisse der Deutschen Tiefsee-Expedition auf dem Dampfer 'Valdiva' 1898-1899 18: 1-542 of a specimen described as Calliteuthis hoylei; the type specimen is small, immature and in too poor condition for redescription, therefore dofleni was reatined by N. Voss.).
