Introduction

This genus is currently monotypic with the single highly variable species said by Evans (1966) to be "Widely distributed in every State". However, there are no records listed in the Australian Plant Pest Database from either the ACT nor the Northern Territory. Jones & Deitz (2009) state that all the Stenocotini are restricted to Australia. However, two of the synonyms created by Evans (1966) were originally described from elsewhere, Ledra conferta Walker 1851 from Hong Kong and L. unicolor Walker 1851 from the Philippines. Evans (1966: 104) states that both specimens appear to be males of S. depressa and concludes that the locality data for both specimens is clearly incorrect.

Diagnosis

Corpus depressum, planiusculum. Caput obtuse triangulariter productum, cum oculis thorace sublatius, margine antico attenuato, acutiusculo; fronte a basi parum ampliata, dein medio subito angustata et a medio paralella; vertice subarcuato, brevi; oculis in fovea oblonga, transversa in margine apicali verticis utrimque locatis. Thorax anterius valde productus, basi late sinuatus, lateribus rectis, paralellis. Hemelytra nervis longitudinalibus, pone medium furcatis. Pedes mediocres (Stål 1854).

The labium extends beyond the hind coxae and the maxillary plates narrowly beyond the apex of the anteclypeus. The maxillary suture is discernible as a transverse fold and the postclypeus is narrow, parallel-sided and flat. The frons, which is three times as wide as the postclypeus and extends as far as the hind margin of the face, is raised medially into a ridge. The antennal ledges are oblique and the ocelli, which are in marginal depressions, are visible only in dorsal aspect. The crown is wider in the centre than against the eyes and the eyes are prominent. The pronotum is almost as wide as long and the scutellum is flat. In the tegmina, R1 has numerous costal veinlets, Cu1 has several branches and the anal veins form a Y-vein. The hind tibiae, which are quadrilateral in section, have three rows of small marginal spines and row of six flattened spurs with apical spines, which decrease in size from the apex to the base. In the female the abdomen extends slightly beyond the folded tegmina. The males are approximately seven tenths the lengths of the females. In the male genitalia the subgenital plates are narrow and parallel-sided and the parameres are less than half the length of the subgenital plates. The pygophores are broad and have marginal styles (Evans 1966).
