Genus Spilarctia Butler, 1875

Introduction

Watson, Fletcher & Nye (1980):
Butler, 1875, included Phalaena lubricipeda Linnaeus, 1758, Syst. Nat. (Edn 10) 1: 505, in Spilarctia, and Kirby, 1877, designated it as the type-species. Kirby, 1892, Synonymic Cat. Lepid. Heterocera 1: 227, indicated that the true lubricipeda Linnaeus, 1758, was the senior subjective synonym of Phalaena lubricipeda alba Hufnagel, 1776, and also of Bombyx menthastri [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, (the type-species of Spilosoma Curtis, 1825). Kirby, 1892, ibidem 1: 229, indicated that Phalaena lubricipeda lutea Hufnagel, 1766, was the valid name for lubricipeda var. beta Linnaeus, 1758, and for lubricipeda sensu Butler, 1875.

Spilarctia Butler is a case of a genus that has a misidentified type-species and so should be referred to the Commission under the Code, Article 70(a).

Species Spilarctia erythrastis and S. nobilis moved from genus Spilosoma on recommendation of T. Edwards (pers. comm. 2020)
