Introduction
The world Arctiinae were revised by Hampson (1901) and treated in Lepidopterorum Catalogus by Strand (1919) and Bryk (1937). In Volume 10 of Seitz's Macrolepidoptera of the World they were listed by Rothschild (1914) and Seitz (1914-1915). The Australian fauna was revised by Meyrick (1886) and Turner (1940). Turner (1921) reviewed Nyctemera Hübner and its allies as part of the Hypsidae. The composition of this subfamily has changed at times with the inclusion or exclusion of Argina Hübner and its allies as part of the Hypsidae.
Australia has a small fauna of Arctiinae. All described genera except one occur widely in South-east Asia. The exception, Phaos Walker, is confined to alpine areas of south-eastern Australia and Tasmania, and is closely related, or congeneric with Metacrias Meyrick from New Zealand. There have only been a few minor taxonomic changes since Edwards (1996) compiled the Australian checklist.
Further work on generic classification is required, comparing Australian species with extralimital fauna, especially for species currently placed in the paraphyletic genus Spilosoma Butler. In addition, two Australian species cannot be placed in any known genera.
