Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy

 

Introduction

This species is better known in the literature as Sogatella longifurcifera (Esaki & Ishihara) and is a known vector of a disease of maize in the Middle East. In Australia, it has usually been confused in collections with S. kolophon.

Ecological Descriptors

All stages: phloem feeder.

 

Diagnosis

S. vibix differs from other species of the genus in the shape of the male genitalia. The parameres have the outer process of the apical bifurcation dilating from base to middle then tapering to apex with dorsal margin forming a blunt angle. In coloration, S. vibix is stramineous or pale yellow. Males have dark brown genae. (Asche & Wilson 1990)
