Introduction

The whitebacked planthopper (also known as WPH or WBPH) was regarded by Wilson & Claridge (1991) as the second worst pest of rice in Asia where it causes direct feeding damage rather than causing loss through transmission of a pathogen. Some variation occurs across its range but Asche and Wilson (1990) pointed out that this variation can occur in a single population. The Australian records need clarification. Asche & Wilson (1990) recorded it from Queensland and the Northern Territory but the Queensland record is credited to Fennah (1965) who only recorded it from Humpty Doo in the Northern Territory. Barlett's delphacid database on the 3i website (http://ctap.inhs.uiuc.edu/dmitriev/index.asp) does not record it from Australia at all. The Australian Plant Pest Database (APPD) at http://www.planthealthaustralia.com.au/go/phau/capacity-and-capability/information-support-systems/appd provides records of the species from Western Australia and the Brisbane area of Queensland.

Diagnosis

Males with dark frons, clypeus and genae. Tegmina with dark or fuscous marking at tip of clavus, which in females may be less developed or missing. This species can readily be distinguished from the other Sogatella species by structures of the male genitalia: the parameres strongly dilated at base, apex relatively small, almost equally bifurcate. (Asche & Wilson 1990)

ID Keys
