Introduction
Previously placed as a subspecies of Sminthopsis virginiae (de Tarragon, 1847), however recent molecular analysis by Umbrello et al. (2024) has confirmed earlier suggestions (e.g., Blacket et al. 2001) that the taxon should be recognised at the species level.
