Tribe Sikaianini Muir, 1913

Compiler and date details

18 January 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

Muir (1913) defined four generic groups based on the shape and venation of the tegmina and this is taken as the first attempt to define a higher classification for the Derbidae. His Group III included those forms in which the forewings (tegmina) are exceptionally long and narrow, more than double the length of the hindwings. The group was further divided into two subgroups, the Sikiana subgroup (derived from a mispelling of Sikaiana Distant although Kirkaldy (loc. cit.) used the mispelling three times so it was not just a typographic error) and the Zoraida subgroup. The tribe was first called Sikaianini by Muir (1917).

Diagnosis

Tegmina exceptionally long and narrow, wings very minute; delicate little creatures, with wings apparently wholly devoted to sound production (Muir 1913).

Stridulatory plate with convex external margin; clavus open; margins of eyes extending to epistomal suture anterior to antennae in area of bridle (Emeljanov 1996).
