Family BDELLIDAE Dugès, 1834
Introduction
The Bdellidae is a family of 16 genera and more than 250 species of predators that feed on other mites and small soft-bodied insects (Walter et al. 2009; Hernandes et al. 2016). They occur in a wide range of microhabitats including the soil surface, leaf litter, on low plants, and under rocks and bark. They are easily recognised by their elongate snout-like gnathosoma. Some species may be beneficial in contributing to the control of pest mites and insects (reviewed by Gerson et al. 2003). In Australia, Bdellodes lapidaria and Neomolgus capillatus contribute to the control of the lucerne flea Sminthurus viridis. The Australian fauna of seven genera and 42 species of Bdellidae was reviewed by Wallace & Mahon (1973, 1976). Hernandes et al. (2016) prepared a comprehensive catalogue of the family, which forms the basis of the classification used here.
Many of the records of Australian Bdellidae in Womersley (1933) were based on misidentifications, which were corrected by Wallace & Mahon (1973, 1976). For example, Womersley (1933) and Atyeo (1963) reported Biscirus silvaticus (Kramer) from Australia, but these specimens were re-identified by Wallace & Mahon (1973) as a mixture of B. aquilonius and B. arenarius. Bdella lignicola Canestrini sensu Womersley was re-identified as Spinibdella depressa by Atyeo (1963), but Wallace & Mahon (1973) pointed out that the identification of these species is very ambiguous. Womersley's Australian records of Scirus longirostris, Bdella lignicola, Biscirus silvaticus, Biscirus intermedius and Biscirus symmetricus are also based on misidentifications. Some of these misidentifications are repeated in Hernandes et al. (2016) and Paktinat-Saeej et al. (2016).
Unidentified species have been recorded from Australia a number of times as listed for each genus, and unidentified Bdellidae were also reported by Wood (1971), Greenslade (1985), Noble et al. (1990, 1996a, 1996b), Stone & Simpson (1990), James & Whitney (1993), Walter et al. (1994), Walter (1995), Frost & Bailey (1997), Longstaff et al. (1999), Osler et al. (2000), Callan et al. (2011), Beyer et al. (2011) and Proctor et al. (2011).
