Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy
Introduction
This interesting group of small benthic shrimps comprises two families, Stenopodidae Claus, 1872, and Spongicolidae Schram, 1986. Originally considered to be in the Penaeidae, they were later transferred to the Carididae, before being recognised as their own 'tribe' by Bate (1888). Holthuis (1993: 307–308) discussed the history of the group, and provided a key to the families and genera.
Diagnosis
Carapace more or less cylindrical, fused to thorax; eyes stalked, compound; antennules biramous; antennae with 5-segmented peduncle and scaphocerite. Epistome in two parts narrow anterior portion between antennae, posterior portion usually heavily armed with spines on perimeter of circular portion to which labrum attaches. Mandibles with incisor and molar processes fused, but separated by groove; palp incurved, usually 3-segmented. Maxillulae with endopodal palp. Maxillae biramous; with two bilobed endites. First maxillipeds with endopod of two segments; without crista dentata. Third maxillipeds long, pediform, with 7 segments. First three pairs of pereiopods chelate; third pair typically enlarged and robust; rarely second longer than third; without exopods. Pleura of anterior abdominal somites usually not expanded, when expanded, enlarged so that first overlaps second; only 3 posterior somites, hinged together by definite locking joints. First pleopods uniramous in both sexes; all pleopods lacking petasma, appendix internae and appendix masculinae. Uropods biramous, lacking diaresis; telson together with broad uropods forming tailfan. Gills trichobranchiate; gill axis bearing numerous simple filaments arranged in irregular row. Gonopores on coxae of third pereiopods of female; on fifth of male; eggs carried on female pleopods, hatch as zoeae (or decapodid) with four pairs of natatory appendages. (With advice from W. Goy, in litt.).
