Family SMARIDIDAE Kramer, 1878

Introduction

Adult Smarididae are predators that feed on small invertebrates in leaf litter and grassland. Their larvae are parasites that attack a wide range of insects. The little available information on their biology was reviewed by Walter et al. (2009). The most substantial single work on the systematics of the family is by Southcott (1963). Southcott (1995) highlighted the problems involved in correlating the larvae and adults. The Australian fauna includes 13 species in four genera, and the most recent work on the fauna was by Southcott (1997). Unidentified species have been recorded from Australia a number of times as listed for each genus, and unidentified Smarididae were also reported by Noble et al. (1996), Kinnear & Tongway (2004), Adolphson & Kinnear (2008), Callan et al. (2011), Beyer et al. (2011) and Majer et al. (2013). The world-wide fauna was catalogued by Mąkol & Wohltmann (2012).
