Family SCUTOVERTICIDAE Grandjean, 1954

Introduction

The family Scutoverticidae includes nine genera and 72 species world-wide (Schatz et al. 2011), as recently revised by Shtanchaeva & Netuzhilin (2003). The family is cosmopolitan, and is most abundant in xeric and arboreal habitats (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). The family is known from Australia only by an incompletely identified species of Scutovertex recorded by Adolphson & Kinnear (2008), and an unidentified species of fossil Scutoverticidae (O'Dowd et al. 1991). The original spelling of this name was Scutovertexidae, but the emended name Scutoverticidae is in almost universal usage, and is retained here in the interest of stability.
