Introduction

A smallish species with banding on the forewings, one of four similarly marked species. This species is widespread in eastern Australia, in coastal as well as inland locations.

Ecological Descriptors

All stages: phloem feeder.

 

Diagnosis

Head and pronotum pale ochraceous; scutellum black, with the lateral margins, apex, a central longitudinal line and an oblique line crossing each lateral area pale testaceous; sternum and legs pale ochraceous, metasternum and abdomen beneath piceous, apical segment with an ochraceous spot on each side; tegmina greyish-white, crossed beyond middle by a broad transverse fuscous fascia, extreme apex fuscous; posterior femora, excluding apices, black or fuscous. Var.—Vertex, and three longitudinal fasciae to pronotum sanguineous; upper half of head beneath sanguineous with four small pale spots. Long. incl. tegm 5 to 6 mm. (Distant 1908).

Yellow to sordid yellow, tinged or marked with scarlet to brown; markings on pronotum often forming three irregular longitudinal bands. Forewings marked as in R. cuprea (Walker) (brownish hyaline with two broad transverse whitish bands, one from middle of clavus and one from basal half of appendix; veins concolorous with cells or scarlet). Abdomen heavily marked with dark brown; pygophore with a yellow patch posteriorly on each side. Legs usually marked with brown to scarlet. Male genitalia similar to those of R. nigra Webb, R. praeda Webb and R. cuprea (Walker) but subgenital plates more elongate, with dorsal marginal setae short, and aedeagus with dorsal marginal processes present. Female genitalia as in R. cuprea. Length ♂ 4.6–5.5 mm, ♀ 5.5–6.1 mm (Webb 1983).
