Genus Rentinus Metcalf, 1947

Compiler and date details

8 February 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

Metcalf (1947) took Eurystheus inductus Walker as the type species of Rentinus but this was not listed as a species included in the genus Eurystheus originally by Stål (1862). The type species for Eurystheus Stål, a preoccupied name, was established by Distant (1906) as Eurystheus dilatatus (Westwood), with which E. inductus was synonymised by Distant (1906). Why Metcalf (1947) gave priority to Pyrops inductus Walker, 1858, over Fuilgora dilatata Westwood, 1839, is not explained. The genus is endemic in Australia and Lallemand (1963) recognised one species comprising two subspecies. The status of these two subspecies needs to be examined based on male genitalia studies to determine their validity. There are probably undescribed taxa in collections and the relationship between this genus and Eurinopsyche Kirkaldy also needs to be examined.

Note that conversion of the original AFD map of states, drainage basins and coastal and oceanic zones to IBRA and IMCRA regions may have produced errors. The new maps will be reviewed and corrected as updates occur. The maps may not indicate the entire distribution. See further details below.

Diagnosis

Caput longe protuberans, carinis genas a fronte et vertice separantibus undulatis; fronte tricarinata, supra clypeum utrimque leviter rotundato-ampliata, dein sursum angustata; clypeo medio carinato. Thorax basi truncatus, antice pone caput obtuse productus, unicarinatus. Scutellum tricarinatum. Tegmina remote transversim venulosa, venulis discoidalibus ramulos liberos emittentibus, area costali dilatata.
