Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy
Introduction
The Thalassocarididae has been variously considered either a subfamily or a junior synonym of the Pandalidae. Menon & Williamson (1971) argued for full family status based on unique larval characters. This view was followed by Chace (1985) and Holthuis (1993). Following an extensive molecular and morphological study Liao et al (2019) found the Thalassocarididae to be nested deeply within the Pandalidae and treat the family as a junior synonym of Pandalidae, the classification followed here. Two genera were recognised in the family, Thalassocaris Stimpson, 1860, and the monotypic Chlorotocoides Kemp, 1925, both now placed in the Pandalidae (see Komai et al 2019), but only the former has been recorded from Australian waters.
The genus is restricted to the Indo-west Pacific Oceans from southern and eastern Africa and Red Sea to Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, and eastward to the Marshall and Fiji islands. Thalassocaridids are typically pelagic over depths of 13 to more than 4,000 metres (Chace 1985).
