Family BARBUTIIDAE Robaux, 1975

Introduction

The only substantial work on the family Barbutiidae is by Fan et al. (2003). They reviewed the four species known in the family, two of which were newly described from Australia. These are minute soft-bodied mites found in forest litter in Europe, USA and Australia. Nothing is known of their biology. The family is provisionally placed in the superfamily Raphignathoidea until it can be analysed in more detail. Proctor et al. (2011) recorded an unidentified species from Queensland.

Family CALIGONELLIDAE Grandjean, 1944

Introduction

The Australian Caligonellidae are very poorly known, with records of only two identified species. Unidentified species in several genera have been recorded from Australia, and unidentified Caligonellidae were also reported by Osler et al. (2000), Adolphson & Kinnear (2008) and Proctor et al. (2011). Elsewhere the family includes five genera of soft-bodied mites found in leaf litter, under bark, in birds' nests, and on low plants (Summers & Schlinger 1955; Walter et al. 2009). The best known regional fauna is that of southern Africa (Smith Meyer & Ueckermann 1989). Nothing is known of their biology; they are believed to be predatory.

Family CAMEROBIIDAE Southcott, 1957

Introduction

The family Camerobiidae includes about 140 species in seven genera. These mites are long-legged predators that occur on trees and grass. They feed on other mites and small soft-bodied insects such as scale insect crawlers (Walter et al. 2009). The classification of the family was thoroughly reviewed by Fan & Walter (2011), and the most important work on the Australian fauna was by Fan & Walter (2006). Four of the seven known genera have been recorded from Australia. Of the nine known Australian species, seven have been described since 2006, suggesting that a much bigger fauna remains unrecognised. Unidentified species have been recorded from Australia a number of times as listed for each genus, and unidentified Camerobiidae were also reported by Adolphson & Kinnear (2008), Callan et al. (2011) and Majer et al (2013).

Family CRYPTOGNATHIDAE Oudemans, 1902

Introduction

The Cryptognathidae is a family of two genera and about 40 species that are found in litter and moss, in lichens, and under bark (Walter et al. 2009). They are easily recognised by the prominent prodorsal hood that projects forward to conceal the gnathosoma from above. The Australian fauna includes seven species, six of which were described by Luxton (1973), who also provided a key to the species known to that time. Unidentified species have been recorded from Australia a number of times as listed for each genus, and unidentified Cryptognathidae were also reported by Springett (1976), Heatwole et al. (1981), Adolphson & Kinnear (2008), Proctor et al. (2011) and Majer et al. (2013). Womersley (1935) recorded Cryptognatha cucurbita Berlese from Australia, but this was a misidentification. The specimens were described under Cryptognathus woodi Luxton, 1973.

Family DASYTHYREIDAE Walter & Gerson, 1998

Introduction

The Dasythyreidae is a small and little-known family of Raphignathoidea that occur under bark and in soil in USA, Russia, and Australia. Three species are known in two genera (Walter & Gerson 1998; Khaustov & Abramov 2010). They appear to be phoretic on corticolous insects (Walter et al. 2009; Khaustov & Abramov 2010), but nothing else is known of their biology. The family is represented in Australia by a single species Xanthodasythyreus toohey, described from soil and litter in Brisbane. Proctor et al. (2011) recorded an unidentified species of Xanthodasythyraeus.

Family EUPALOPSELLIDAE Willmann, 1952

Introduction

The Eupalopsellidae is a cosmopolitan family of about 30 species arranged in five genera (Walter et al., 2009). Smith Meyer & Ueckermann (1984) reviewed the family and provided a key to genera, but some generic re-arrangement has taken place since that time. Some species have been found in leaf litter, but most occur on the bark of trees and shrubs. They are predators that feed on the immature stages of scale insects, and may have some value as biological control agents of scale insect pests (Gerson et al. 2003). The Australian fauna of four species in three genera was revised by Gerson (1994). A further Australian genus, Acaciacarus Gerson, Frost & Swift, 1997, was described in the Eupalopsellidae, but is now placed in the Mecognathidae. Unidentified species have been recorded from Australia a number of times as listed for each genus, and unidentified Eupalopsellidae were also reported by Austin (1993).

Family HOMOCALIGIDAE Wood, 1969

Introduction

The Homocaligidae is a small family of aquatic mites that can skate across the surface of water, especially in swampy habitats (Walter et al. 2009). The limited amount of information on the family is widely scattered, with records from North America, South Africa, China, and Malaysia. Smith Meyer & Ueckermann (1989) listed the five species known to that time, and Fan (1997) raised the total number of species in the family to eight. The family is known from Australia only on the basis of unidentified species of Annerossella from Queensland, as reported by Walter et al. (2009).

Family MECOGNATHIDAE Gerson & Walter, 1998

Introduction

The family Mecognathidae was established by Gerson & Walter (1998) to accommodate some genera that were previously placed in the Eupalopsellidae and Stigmaeidae. The family includes two genera and five species, reported from North America, South Africa, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand (Walter et al. 2009). They occur on plants and tree bark, and appear to be predatory. The Australian fauna includes two described species of Mecognatha, one of which is also found in New Zealand, and a third unidentified species from Queensland.

Family RAPHIGNATHIDAE Kramer, 1877

Introduction

The Raphignathidae is a cosmopolitan family of about 40 species, most of which are found in leaf litter, under bark, and on low plants, with some records from birds' nests and stored food (Walter et al. 2009). Recent studies of regional faunas are available for southern Africa (Smith Meyer & Ueckermann 1989), China (Fan & Yin 2000) and New Zealand (Fan & Zhang 2005). The Australian Raphignathidae are very poorly known, with only a single named species described from Eucalyptus leaf litter (Atyeo 1963). Unidentified species have been recorded from Australia a number of times as reported by Springett (1976, 1979), Greenslade (1985), Adolphson & Kinnear (2008), Callan et al. (2011) Proctor et al. (2011) and Majer et al. (2013). Walter et al. (2009) referred to a diverse but unstudied Australian fauna of Raphignathidae.

Family STIGMAEIDAE Oudemans, 1931

Introduction

The family Stigmaeidae is a group of about 300 species in 25 genera. Most species appear to be predators, but some feed on mosses. Some species contribute to the control of horticultural pests such as spider mites, and may have potential as biological control agents (Gerson et al. 2003; Walter et al. 2009). Different genera vary widely in the degree of fusion and ornamentation of the idiosomal shields, but the distinctions between genera are not clear-cut, and the whole family is need of taxonomic revision (Walter et al. 2009). Recent major taxonomic studies include revisions of the faunas of New Zealand (Fan & Zhang 2005) and southern Africa (Smith Meyer & Ueckermann 1989), which include keys to genera. The Australian fauna has never been studied in depth, and includes only 12 identified species in six genera, and a further four genera that are known only from unidentified species. Unidentified Stigmaeidae were also reported by Heatwole et al. (1981), Greenslade (1985), Frost & Bailey (1997), Walter (1999), Longstaff et al. (1999), Adolphson & Kinnear (2008), Green (2010), Beyer et al. (2011), Proctor et al. (2011) and Majer et al. (2013).

Chaudhri et al (1979) reported Apostigmaeus navicella Grandjean (1944) from Australia. This appears to be an error, probably referring to the record of this species from New Zealand by Wood (1971). Apostigmaeus navicella is now considered to be a synonym of Storchia robustus (Berlese, 1885) (Wood, 1973). This species has not been recorded from Australia (Fan & Yan, 1997).
