Genus Plinthina Walker, 1850

Introduction

Distinguished by the distinct marbling of the wings, striping on the thorax, and broad, flattened palpi, this genus of Australian horse flies has been recorded to blood-feed on cattle and humans (Mackerras 1960; Lessard 2014).

Previously considered to be a subgenus of Scaptia, it was later raised to genus level based on molecular and morphological evidence (Lessard et al. 2013; Lessard 2014). A key to all 12 known species was provided by Lessard & Yeates (2011).
