Ecological Descriptors

Carnivorous, estuary, marine, neritic, planktonic, zooxanthellate.

 

Diagnosis

Phyllorhiza with the body up to 500 mm wide, jelly very thick, exumbrella finely granular; velar lappets some broad and double, others simple, altogether up to 14 in each octant; arm-disk with numerous filaments; arms three-winged, with numerous tapering, bluntly ending filaments, up to 2/3 of the length of the arms; terminal appendages sometimes very long, with distal expansion; 10-12 canal-roots in each octant.

 

Notes

The species is said to be introduced to California (Larson & Arneson 1990), the Gulf of Mexico (Cutress 1971; Garcia 1990; Garcia & Durbin 1993; Graham et al. 2003; Bolton & Graham 2004), the Mediterranean (Galil et al. 1990; Atta 1991) and Brazil (Tronolone et al. 2002). It is possible that some of these may be cases of mistaken identification.
